Sale Report: 11 July 2012 Primestock

At Cockermouth on Wednesday Mitchell’s held its weekly sale of primestock where 121 prime cattle, bulls and cast cows, and 2,393 prime sheep and cast ewes were forward.

Cattle again sold well to meet high rates with a top of 246 p/kg for a British Blue from Lenny Skelton, Low House Farm.  Brian Whitfield, Stowbank, sold heifers to 231p/kg with Thomas Tyson, East House, topping at 226p/kg to Mark Lindsay, Butcher of Cockermouth.  Len Skelton also sold heifers at 230 and 225p/kg to Haighs Butchers, Workington.  John Bowe, Hunday Farm, sold steers to 222.5p/kg to Peter Smith of Cocklakes Farm Shop.

A marvellous trade for bulls, topping at 216.5p/kg twice from Thomas Tyson, East House, and 214.5p/kg from Gerald Smith, Lake View all purchased by Geoff Birbeck and John Little.

Cast cows maintained recent good prices, although quality was poorer due to the weather.

Prime lambs met another very good trade and with sixteen active sheep buyers an overall sale average of 201.93p/kg was achieved.

Top price per head was £112 for Texel lambs from Geoff Bowe, Bothel Parks, purchased by Ton y Harrison, Butcher of Cockermouth.  Top price per kilo was 219 pence for Texel lambs consigned by Ian Richardson, Greenlands.

Cast ewes were again very good to sell.
