Sale Report: 18 April 2012 Primestock & Dairy

At Cockermouth on Wednesday Mitchell’s held its weekly sale of primestock sale where 82 prime cattle and 2,783 prime sheep including ewes were forward.

Prime cattle saw good demand again with clean topping at 228.5p/kg twice for heifer from John Hodgson, Parsonage Farm and Len Skelton, Low House Farm, both purchased by Mark Lindsay.  Len Skelton’s run of five heifers averaged 226.76p/kg, purchased by Haighs Butchers and Geoff Riley.  John Bowe, Hunday Farm’s cattle topped at 225.5p/kg to Haighs Butchers.  Bulls topped at 210.5p/kg from Brian Whitfield, Stowbank, purchased by John Little.  Cast cows were the dearest ever.

Prime hoggs were much harder to cash, the hardest being heavy sheep.  Anything 28 to 43kg still flying, especially hill breeds.  Top price per head was £107.50 for Texel hoggs from George Gate, Hollins Farm, purchased by Tony Harrison.

Dairy Cattle sold to £1880 for a heifer in milk from A & C Watson, Byresteads Farm purchased by R Swinson. The same home sold another good heifer for £1840 to RS Gate & Son.
