Sale Report: 30 May 2012 Primestock

At Cockermouth on Wednesday Mitchell’s held its weekly sale of primestock sale where 106 prime cattle, bulls, cast cow s and 1,321prime sheep including ewes were forward.

Cattle were a very pleasant trade with a top price of 233.5p/kg being paid for a Charolais heifer from Len Skelton, Low House Farm, purchased by John Little. Brian Whitfield of Stowbank sold heifers up to 225.5p/kg bought by Mark Lindsay. John Bowe, Hunday Farm sold heifers up to 224.5p/kilo, the purchaser was Haighs Butchers.

Bulls were very good to sell, topping at 215.5p and 213.5p/kilo from Andrew Gott of Hartley Farming. Topping the Black & White market was Richard Miller of Arkleby Hall at 173.5p/kilo.

Cast cows were as dear as ever

Prime Steer (Top price per kg – pence) – Limousin – 216.5p Hunday.

Prime Bulls (Top price per kg – pence )–  Limousin – 215.5, 213.5p Hartley Farming; British Blue – 210.5p Stowbank; Blonde – 207.5p Stowbank; Charolais – 201.5p Gate House; Black & White – 173.5p Arkleby Hall.

Cast Cows (Top price per kg – pence ) – British Blue – 176.5 Beck House. Limousin – 172.5 East House. Blonde – 172.5p How Hall; Bazadaise – 172.5p Whicham Hall; South Devon – 156.5p Maudesyke; Black & White – 148.5p Byresteads; Holstein – 144.5p Weary Hall.

Spring Lambs were in keener demand, with lighter lambs selling best (42 kilos is as heavy as they need to be so keep selling). An overall sale average of 201p per kilo was a very satisfactory result.

Top price of the day was £104.50 for Suffolks consigned by JJ & E Dobson, Westend Farm the purchaser being Robert Skelton. Top price per kilo was 239 pence for Texels from Ian Armstrong, Terrace Farm, also purchased by Robert Skelton.

Cast sheep were cheaper on the week.
