Sale Report: 5 Dec 2012 Primestock

At Cockermouth, on Wednesday 5th December, Mitchells had forward 98 prime cattle, bulls and cast cows, and 2393 prime sheep including ewes.

Prime bulls and cast cows were the focus of attention in the Christmas Show and sale.  Judge, Mr John Little was presented with a strong show and the Alan Bowe Perpetual Trophy was awarded to a Limousin Bull from D & MA Wilson, Lamplugh Hall.  The bull was sold at 230 pence per kilo and purchased by the judge.

The best cast cow forward was a Limousin from John Watson, Outgang, and she sold for 200.5 pence per kilo to Woolley Bros, Sheffield.

All cattle were very well sold.

Lambs were slightly cheaper on the week, but an overall average of 157.37 pence per kilo was achieved with twelve active buyers.

Top price per head was £91.50 for Texels from Andrew Nicholson, Swinside End, purchased by Stephen Stoddart.  Top price per kilo was 217.9, also for Swinside End lambs, purchased by Robin Vevers.

Highest priced Mules per head were £73 from Philip Walker, Beech Croft, and 152p/kilo was paid for lambs from Neil Marston, Millstone Moor.

It was evident the lighter hill lamb trade is starting to take a lift and cast ewes looked sharper too.
