Sale Report: 6th & 7th October 2017 Herdwick 2 day Sale and Continential Tups

On Friday 6th & Saturday 7th October 2017 Mitchells Auction Co, Cockermouth, Cumbria held the annual 2 day sale of Herdwick breeding ewes and rams and it was a sight to behold with the ring packed to the rafters with prospective purchasers from every corner of the country. By the conclusion of the sale sheep were heading to 27 counties and as far south as Devon and as North as Aberdeen. The sales were kindly sponsored by TW Relph & Son, Robinson & Co Accountants & Bluefin Insurance.

The judging of the females started the weekend on a high with AD & T Harrison, Brotherilkeld being awarded the championship by Kevin Wrathall, Cockley Beck with this pen of ewes later selling for £180 per head to A & A Whittle, Knott End Farm. The reserve champion pen was CI Hartley, Barfields pen of 5 ewe lambs which later sold for £80 per head to R & A Ellwood, Baskell Cottage.

Prices for breeding ewes topped at £220 per head twice for a pen of 3 crop ewes from R Wilkinson & R Tennant, Gatesgarth as well as a pen of 3 crop ewes from AS &C Hodgson, Glencoyne.

The latter sale of Cheviot & Continental breeding rams saw a great trade throughout with a 2 shear Texel ram from J Clark, Bent Ash topping the trade at £550.

Day 2 of the Herdwick extravaganza saw the official show & sale of Herdwick rams held under the auspices of the H.S.B.A. The show was kindly judged by Willie Richardson, Gatesgarth and Bobsy Tyson, Threlkeld who had a very difficult task with huge classes of up to 40 rams.

The championship line up saw 3 terrific rams for the judges to select from with WS Jackson, Nook Farm being selected at the 2017 champion followed by Anthony Hartley, Turner Hall as the reserve. WS Jackson, Nook Farms champion ram later sold to D & S H Ellwood, Baskell Farm for 2500gns.

The conclusion of judging sale the start of the sale with Anthony Hartley being balloted on and his first ram in the ring was the 1st prize shearing & reserve champion, bidding was fierce and saw a new breed record being set at 10,000gns he now heads off to be stock ram from James Rebanks, Racy Gill and Richard Weir, Chapel Farm. The ram was backed by generations of Turner Hall breeding being sired by a homebred ram.

The sale saw a staggering 37 rams breaking the 1000gns mark and 11 breaking the 2000gns barrier.

An overall average for Herdwick rams of £745.16 was achieved which is up £273.44 on the year.
